Basic Information

SIZE Very large, similar to a bison (Bison bison). Skull length: 21 in (54 cm). Head-body length: probably 6.5–8 ft (2–2.5 m). Body mass: 1,300–1,750 lb (600–800 kg).

ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS Terrestrial and quadrupedal. Herbivorous, details uncertain.

EVOLUTIONARY RELATIONSHIPS Order Notoungulata (extinct). Uncertain position in family.

MEANING OF NAME Genus means “triangular tooth” and refers to the shape of the lower incisors. Ameghino originally spelled it Trigonodon but changed it after discovering a fossil fish already had the same name.
